With Valentine's Day only a few days away, I decided to change the usual 'Splurge of the Week'. Instead of pampering ourselves this week, let's make the upcoming celebration of love extra special for your sweetie. As I was doing my window shopping, most of the sites I visited like Shopbop, Saks and Nordstrom has a section dedicated to Valentine's Day gifts. After a very successful 2008 season with the house of Dior, I pondered if John Galliano can top that.Dior's spring couture collection last year had a sixties vibe. Models wore lamp-shade and saucer hats, towering up-dos and eyelashes for miles. This year's collection still has Galliano's excess and it's all about tight waists and full-skirts with beauty taking in a more classic tone. The collection is quite romantic, I say. Silhouettes are chic and feminine. And I just can't get enough of the gowns with tons of lace and chiffon embroidery.
Shame on me to even doubt Galliano for a second. It doesn't matter whom he is going against with. He will come out with something more fabulous and fiercer, even if that person is himself!

Alexander McQueen redeemed himself with his men's fall 2009 collection after a not so much spring collection. The collection named 'The McQueensberry Rules' if ever made to a movie, will have characters that can be described as 'The Gangs of New York' meets 'Sweeney Todd' meets 'Interview with a Vampire' meets 'Cinderella Man'.
The collection also showcases McQueen's impeccable mastery of the art of tailoring. It's obvious that the creative juices are flowing abundantly when he designed this collection. I can't wait for his women's fall collection!

We've heard all about the fabulous gift bags Hollywood celebrities get during award shows. In the recent Golden Globes Award, this Passchal 'the bag' Shoulder Bag was one of the many chic items in the goody bag. And it's made out of 100% recycled tractor inner tubes! Now, that is 'smart' eco-stylin'.
At first, the price seemed a little to much in my opinion. But then I thought, we can't put a price tag on the environment. If paying for a $325.00 earth-friendly handbag will help save a dying river caused by factories dumping their chemicals, it is worth every single penny.

It's obvious that blue is my favorite color but ironically I don't really wear blue much. Anyhow, this spring royal blue is a key color. Most of the Men's Spring 2009 Collections had something blue. Gucci is perhaps the one that used this color trend the most. And the most innovative usage goes to Christian Dior's royal blue sunglasses.

A fierce dress deserves only deserves equally fierce shoes. When I came across this Keyhole Sheath dress by Black Halo, I was impressed. This goes to show that Black Halo is not a one-hit wonder with their coveted 'Jackie O' dress. This dress is priced at $370.00 it's a little higher than what I expected it to be. But it's all worth it. Simply put, this dress is affordable 'haute couture'.
While browsing Saks, I saw a pair of booties from Max Kibardin and I became a fan right away. His background in architecture is evident with his shoes. The synergy of symmetry, structure and imagination creates footwear the are works of art.

Since it's inception in the early 1930s, aviator sunglasses had it's fair share of design updates and changes. The original aviator sunglasses Ray-ban made for the U.S. military are not that bad. Personally, I'm not a fan of gold-rimmed, green tinted sunglasses. When I was 10 years old, I remember begging my mom for days to get me a pair of Maverick's sunglasses after watching Top Gun.
Aviator style sunglasses will surely never go out-of-style. So, investing on a pair will save you a couple of hundred dollars a year. Unless you tend to lose yours like me, then you'll save more than that. I can attest to that based on personal experience. I bought a pair of Dior Homme aviators a year ago and they are still in pretty good shape. It was a splurge I don't regret. And because of the price I paid for them, I'm more mindful of not to lose them.

A key trend this spring for men are cropped, rolled up, hiked up and Capri pants made an appearance in most of Men's Spring 2009 Collections. I like Duckie Brown's pairing knee-length pants with tights. Marc Jacobs by Marc Jacobs Men's Spring '09 Collection is definitely one of my favorites. The collection presented great American sportswear and grunge looks but with sophistication. Gilded Age rolled up their denim jeans, a risk they are taking on how guys would respond to this trend. Personally, I love it.

'Smart EcoStyle of the Week' was a category I added a couple of months after launching TheSmartStylist.com. I saw this as an opportunity to increase awareness of eco-fabulous and eco-chic fashion, shoes and accessories. My way of helping the green revolution.
I have to admit my knowledge of eco-friendly fashion was limited. But with the daily research on the latest trends in eco-fashion, I gained vast knowledge on labor practices and sustainable materials used to make earth friendly merchandise. I also came to appreciate all the efforts designers and manufacturers do to help save mother earth one organic dress at a time.

I consider 2008, one of the best year for men's footwear. Styles and designs were made with the modern man in mind and what he would wear. I liked the fact that a variety of men's footwear styles earned 'must-have' recognitions throughout the year.
Metallic was not just for the ladies. Metallic sneakers were hot for fall. The renaissance of 80's fashion icon, 'hi-top' sneakers were the craze for summer. Prada's Men's Fall / Winter shoe collection made it clear that patent can also be a guy thing. And PUMA went retro-modern to commemorate it's 60th Birthday Celebration.
